Accelerated Reader

We are made whole by books,
as by great spaces and the stars.

                                                       What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?

Accelerated Reader is a computerized reading program. It will be used by students in grades 2-5 in Cuyler. Students may read an Accelerated Reader book, take a short multiple choice quiz on the computer, and earn points based on the length and difficulty of the book and how well they do on the quiz.

What is the purpose of the program?

The purpose of the program is to motivate and build enthusiasm so children will want to read. We hope to create an excitement about books and reading that will last a lifetime. As students participate in the program and we see how well they do on the quizzes, we gain valuable information about their reading abilities and what we can do to help them. Students end up reading a wide variety of literature. Increased time spent reading contributes to an increase in test scores.

                              What books can students read?

The Cuyler Library has a list of the books we have Accelerated Reader quizzes for. The books are identified by a color code for readability level. It is important to note that if your child has an interest in reading a particular book, please do not discourage them from doing so just because we do not have an AR quiz for the book. We want the students reading quality literature whether there is an AR quiz for the book or not.

Click on the graphic below and it will take you to a list of Cuyler's AR Quiz List. The books are listed by title, author, reading level, and point value.

How are Accelerated Reader points used?

Students who earn a specific number of points will be recognized by having their pictures mounted
on the "Wall of Readers" in the hallway outside of the library.
Their names will be mentioned on the morning announcements.
These students will also be eligible to attend a special activity at the end of the school year.
In addition, there is an "AR CHAMPS" banner for each grade level. At the end of each month, the
classroom that has earned the most points for that month will have the honor of keeping the
      banner.
Students will receive a small prize every time they get farther down the "Yellow Brick Road." Point
increments are determined for each grade level.

How can parents help with "Acclerated Reader?"

Parents can encourage their children to read every night at home. Parents can also contribute to the program by reading aloud to their children. Children are very capable of enjoying books above their reading level when they are read to them by parents and teachers.
