Meet the Teacher

By learning you will teach, by teaching you will learn.
~Latin proverb

I was born in Jamaica, NY and raised on Long Island. I lived in Woodhaven until the middle of 5th grade. We then moved to West Islip. My Dad was a postman and my mom was a directory assistance operator. I have 3 brothers and 1 sister. I am second oldest. I grew up near the ocean and spent a lot of time at the beach. My sister lives in Kentucky but the rest of my family still reside on Long Island. I love visiting!

The excitement of learning separates youth from old age. As long as you are learning, you're not old.

Matthew and Jennie

I have been married a very long time and have lived in Liverpool, Constantia, and Fair Haven. All of these towns are in New York State. My husband, Kevin, aka 'Smitty', is an electrician. I have 2 boys, Tim and Matthew. Trouble was our 112 lb. black lab. Cheniqua is our adopted kitty!

This was taken a few summers ago. Three are missing from this picture of my side of the family. It's so much fun when we all get together on Long Island, or at my mom's summer home in the Adirondacks.

These are my three beautiful nieces, Melissa, Shannon, and Becky.   They live in Geneva, N.Y and love to play sports and shop!!  They come to visit me during the summer.  We pig out on junk food and go shopping!

Here we are with Mr. Smith's Mom and Dad, my nieces, and their parents. We were all together because Tim came home from Key West to visit for a week. Our class was pen pals with my niece Becky, when she was in third grade!

After graduating from West Islip High School in 1973, I attended SUNY Cobleskill. I earned an AAS degree in Nursery Education in 1975. I then transferred to SUNY Cortland, where I earned a BS degree in Elementary Education Grades K, 1- 6 in 1977. When Tim entered kindergarten I began working on my master's degree. I attained my MS degree in Early Childhood, Elementary Education at SUNY Oswego in 1989.

Upon graduating from college I worked as a Directory Assistance Operator by night, and as a substitute teacher by day. In 1979 I applied for a job as Program Director of the Greater East Syracuse Day Care Center. I worked at this job until I had my first child, which was in 1981. It was at this point that I decided to stay home and raise my family.

My "first" job after being a "stay at home mom" was as a Resource Teacher at the elementary and high school level in the Red Creek Central School District in 1989. I then moved to a third grade position within the district at the M.W. Cuyler Elementary School. Third grade led to a looping experience, where I taught the same class from 2nd to 3rd grade for several years. A really great opportunity arose and I left the classroom to work in the area of elementary technology. I did this for a year and a half, but returned to teaching because I MISSED the classroom immensely!

Teachers on Assignment

These are my colleagues from the Oswego City School District, where I worked for a year and a half (2002-2004). We worked on attaining the goal of a true standards-based educational system. We traveled to the state education department in Albany, and worked with consultants in Vermont and Florida. I was involved with teaching professional development classes to teachers, planning Superintendent Conference Days, developing a web-based standards-based report card, and supporting teachers in the area of technology. I worked with an amazing team of teachers and learned so much. This was a valuable experience.

I returned to Red Creek in the fall of 2004 but was detoured from returning to the classroom. I took on the role of Tier II Coach under the guidelines of the Reading First Grant that our school district was awarded. To learn more about this grant and the Cuyler Reading Program, visit the web site I created at http://www.rccsd.org/reading/index.htm

The great big smile on my face in the picture to the left is due to the fact that I am returning to teach third grade in the fall (2005). I have had an amazing two and a half years out of the classroom, expanding my own horizons and learning so very much. The truth be told, I was "born to teach" and I return to the classroom with great anticipation and joy!

                                       Exciting Career Update
As of February 2007 I will again be involved working with the Oswego City School District as a Web Page Development Consultant. Education is ever-changing. I will be involved with aligning ELA resources with curriculum and  standards to start, then will be creating online ELA web resources for primary grades Pre-K through 3rd grade.
