| In third
grade we spend time learning how to do research and write a research report.
This year I decided to teach the children how to use Microsoft PowerPoint
and we put our planet research into a PowerPoint presentation. It's amazing
how quickly the children pick up on the ins and outs of a new program. All I
had to do is show them something once and they knew what to do.
What was even more exciting is that
the children, through trial and error, found so many more of the
capabilities PowerPoint has to offer by experimenting on their own. A third
bonus was that more than half the children asked if they could do another
PowerPoint in their "free time." They were so excited with this project, as
well as presenting their PowerPoint to their classmates.
Another added bonus was that in our
Houghton-Mifflin core reading program one of the study skills is internet
research, which is also a tested skill on their Theme 4 test. We got first
hand practice with so many of the skills the children were expected to know
by doing this project.
