Snowman Fun!

What better way to learn how to write effective directions than to go outside on a blustery, wintry day, build a snowman, then write directions that someone could follow to build your snowman!

Calling all parents! We are going to write directions for building a snowman, but first we need your help! A letter home is the first step to insure a successful build! Click on the hat below for the letter!

Prior to the build it was important to do some preliminary work. Since directions require use of time order words, or as the kids would say, "Mrs. Smith, they are sequence words!", we spent a bit of time brainstorming the sequence words we thought we might use in our directions piece. These words were listed on chart paper for the children to refer to.

Another focus in our writing piece is going to be that of using adjectives to describe the nouns we use in our directions. We brainstormed, and listed on chart paper, adjectives that would describe snow, weather, and the decorations that might be put on the snowmen.

This is just the start of our brainstorming session!

your students to keep a list of their own as you brainstorm as a class.

The next step is to pair up the children. Once the children have their partner it is important to brainstorm and make a list of the things each will bring in to make their snowman extra special. It is important to stress that the children ask their parent for permission before bringing anything into school. A short letter home is helpful so that the children bring in only items that their parent gives approval for. Need a graphic organizer for a sequence piece? Houghton-Mifflin's EduPlace site has lots of resources for parents, teachers, and students. Here's a graphic organizer that works well for step by step directions.
