New York State
Learning Standards

What does Standards-Based Education REALLY mean?

The learning standards for each subject area tell us what students "should know

and be able to do"
at each grade level.

In a standards-based educational system the curriculum is taught and assessed at
     each grade level.

Teachers inform students of learning outcomes so they are aware of what they

"should know and be able to do."

Each learning standard is accompanied by Key Ideas, Performance Indicators, and
     Core Curriculum.

The core curriculum specifically identifies what each student in New York State

"should
know and be able to do."

Standards help teachers focus their instruction, which should result in higher
     student achievement.
